I was in my early 20’s and I had a wife and a young daughter. I had a fairly successful asphalt business. It was hard work. During the day, I was on the job site working on someone’s driveway and in the evening I was pounding the pavement, going door to door looking for more work. I put in a lot of hours, but I was young and ambitious, not to mention that I had to produce for my young family. Business was good during spring, summer, and into the fall. However, work came to a screeching halt when winter came.
I wanted to find a business that was not seasonal. One day during my slow season I was at the shopping mall just people watching. You can learn a lot just by studying people and their habits or mannerisms. Anyways, I saw something that day that I didn’t see before. As people were passing me, I noticed that the majority of them were wearing t-shirts or caps that had something printed on them. At that moment, I thought to myself, “I could print those shirts and caps.” I really didn’t know anything about the screen printing business at the time, but that moment changed my career direction. I started this business with little knowledge or experience of what it would take to even print a one-sided custom screen printed job. However, many years later, almost 20 years now, I have a successful, lucrative business in the custom silk screening and embroidery business.
