Finding Potential New Customers

When you break down the anatomy of an embroidery sale, it has two major parts. The first and most challenging part is trying to find someone who happens to be in the market for whatever it is you are selling at this particular point in time. The other part of this equation is not nearly as difficult. It is often referred to as closing the customer. Let’s take a good close at both of these critical pieces and we will start with step one and that is looking for a potential buyer. I just happen to run a successful Columbus, Ohio screen printing company that specializes in custom T-shirts so we will use this as an example. We could boast about being the very finest and most efficient at what we do, but nothing at all is going to happen if we don’t have any customers. There is a lot of ways to go about making this happen but I am certainly a fan of whatever is easy. I’d much rather work smarter than harder. For example, at the end of the month when your bills come due, nobody cares about how hard you tried to make ends meet. All they want is their payment and they want it in full and on time. Effort is admirable, but that in itself is far from sufficient, as you have to have results.

There are certainly no 100% guarantees when it comes to marketing. Any option you choose to exercise is going to be a calculated risk and whether or not it proves itself to be a worthy endeavor is going to be determined simply by the return on your investment. The total dollar amount spent is always relative to what it brings back. For example, I would have no problem spending $1000 a day if it yielded $10,000 back in to the business. That would be what I would consider to be an excellent investment and I would do that every day if I could. I consider myself to be an old school marketer who at the same time, likes to take advantage of the many benefits that modern technology has lent itself to.

It’s an amazing time to be a self-employed entrepreneur with digital information being able to travel around the globe in a mere matter of seconds. Distance is almost irrelevant anymore as you could be working from your kitchen table while at the same time reaching markets that are thousands of miles away with just the click of a mouse.

One of the tried and true tested methods of finding new potential buyers is simply going from door to door. This is how I got my start. I would walk into a place of business and introduce myself and I would simply ask if I could speak to the manager for the owner of the company. I would first have to get by the receptionist or secretary who often acts like a guard dog. There was no reason to waste my breath talking to her because she is not the decision-maker. Assuming that I could get to the owner and he was even available or on the premises, I would go into my presentation and it normally went something like this. “Would you mind if the next time you happen to be in the market for a Columbus, Ohio digital T-shirt printing company, if I could please just have a chance to give you a quote? We also do custom embroidery as well but screen printing is our bread-and-butter.” There you go. Not much to it as it is really very simple.
